You remember, don’t you? When your baby’s hair began to grow in and she got the most gorgeous curls. It began awkward at first, but soon was cuter than you could ever have known.
You adored those curls. They just seemed to add to just how cute your baby was. As her hair grew, you were glad to just let it grow. You wanted to hold onto those curls just as you held onto your baby.
As her hair got longer, she got bigger. She shed her baby rolls and you suddenly no longer had a baby, but a little girl. A girl who could run and jump. A girl who could play on her own. A girl who no longer needed you for everything.
She said she didn’t want a haircut, so you kept those curls. Each time you washed her hair, they bounced back, reminding you of the baby she once was while also showing you how much time had passed. How you could view the time gone by in the length of her hair.
Then one day, she told you she was ready. Your baby actually wanted a haircut. She wanted to try something new.
She didn’t know how you loved those curls. How they reminded you of holding her close and rocking her to sleep. How they reminded you of first steps and toddler baths. Of playtime and giggles. Of first words and birthdays. The first hair that ever sprouted on her head was about to be gone. You didn’t quite know how to feel about it.
But when she told you she was ready, you were proud too. Proud to share another first with her. Glad that while many firsts had come and gone, there were still many yet to come.
As the curls fell to the floor, you thought to the future. To the first day of school. To the first book she would read on her own. You thought of all the things that were to come and all the things that had been. Even though her baby curls are gone, she will always be your baby. Nothing can take away those memories.
