When you have kids, it can be really hard getting any time for yourself. Add in a pandemic and it’s becoming close to impossible. Whether you’re a freelance writer, established novelist or just love to write, you need to find a way to get it done.
Writing can be hard enough as it is. Finding the time and the inspiration concurrently without kids is difficult. I have two. A 4 year old and a 1 year old. I remember when my first hit about 18 months. She began to hate my laptop. Whenever I pulled it out, she got really mad. She was beginning to realize what it meant. It meant that I was trying to work and not paying enough attention to her. At the time, I wrote only on my laptop. That’s what I was used to. When my son came along, it all changed.
Write on your phone.
Writing on my phone is seriously how I get anything done. I’ve adapted and have gotten much faster at it. Sure, a laptop is easier for editing, but for new content a phone will do just fine. It just takes a little getting used to.
Save to the cloud.
Google Docs is great for saving my writing. I can access it on my phone, tablet or laptop. So no matter where I am, I can get to what I need. Plus then it’s already backed up. .
Take advantage of naptime.
It’s easiest for me to focus when the kids are asleep. This is another time my phone comes in handy because the baby likes to cuddle. I can still work on my phone.
Give the kids something exciting to do.
Kids love special activities and new stuff. Give them something fun to do and you’ll be able to get a few minutes to write. This could be as simple as printing out some coloring pages. If you have more than one kid, they can help entertain each other.
Give yourself a break.
Kids are awesome, but they’re all-consuming. Go easy on yourself if you’re not able to write as much as you like. Playtime with your kids is essential too!
There you have it. My tips for writing with little kids. Any more tips to share? I’m sure it’ll change as they get older, but right now, it’s interesting! Anyone else’s toddlers hate their laptop? Ha!
