For my entry in the Bing and Bob Blogathon, I decided to write about the last true Road to movie – The Road to Bali from 1952. Yes, I know that there is The Road to Hong Kong, but without Dorothy Lamour as a main character, it falls short for me. She made a cameo, but was replaced as the love interest by Joan Collins. Pretty much just because Joan was younger. I always felt that was unfair to do to her after she completed so many movies with them. Anyway! I’m here to talk about the last true collaboration of the trio!
Synopsis:
Performers, George {Bing} and Harold {Bob}, flee when they discover that their love dalliances are intent on marrying them. They end up signing up for a deep sea dive to find a lost treasure. When they arrive, they both fall for Princess Lala, who is the cousin of the man seeking the treasure.
Bing and Bob
As you’ll see, this is the only Road to movie that was filmed in color. This is the opening number-
I love the Road to movies for all the asides to the audience and shots they take at each other for the sake of comedy. They’re so much fun to watch. These guys rib on each other constantly,. Their asides to the audience and breaking the fourth wall are great. At one point, Bob tells us that we should go get some popcorn because Bing about to sing.
Add in Dorothy Lamour, and things are even more fun! Like this number. This is my favorite in the entire series:
Fun cameos
It’s always fun to see other actors pop up quickly in the Road to movies and this one does not disappoint.
Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis pop up in Lala’s dream.
Bing’s brother Bob gets a shot in the movie. Literally. He walks in, shoots a gun, and leaves.
Humphrey Bogart shows up in a scene referencing The African Queen.
Jane Russell shows up!
Outtake!
I came across this interested outtake from the film. Instead of the cameo by Dean and Jerry, this scene was supposed to take place. It was decided that it slowed down the action too much and was replaced, but it is still fun to watch!
My kids especially liked the giant squid and the monkeys! After watching this one again, I’m planning on rewatching all of them! You can even watch this one on YouTube as it’s public domain.
