Thankful for Singin in the Rain

There are so many classic movies that I love, but Singin’ in the Rain is truly the one that started it all for me. I knew I had to write about it when I came across 18 Cinema Lane‘s Blogathon to be Thankful For. My life would definitely be much different if I had never seen this movie.

The Discovery

Back in the good old days of VHS, my Dad used to borrow tapes from a coworker of his. There was one occasion when I was home sick from school. I don’t remember how long I was out, but it must have been at least a few days because I remember there being a string of movies that I went through.

Singin in the Rain struck something in me. It was like I was exposed to an entirely new world. The singing and dancing were topnotch and I was mesmerized. Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds were some of the best in the business. What a great introduction to the world of musicals and classic movies!

Branching Out

After seeing Singin in the Rain, I was inspired to branch out into other classic movies. It was an awesome chain reaction. Gene Kelly led me to a whole bunch of other awesome movies. Through him I discovered the awesomeness of both Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland. Frank Sinatra is now my favorite singer. By seeing their movies together, I branched out into more of Sinatra’s work as well.

Rediscovering Judy through her movies with Gene was such a fun experience. I had, of course, seen her a bunch of times as a kid from watching The Wizard of Oz, but there is so much more to her than just that movie. Through Gene and his other costars, I discovered so many wonderful stars and movies.

Some of my Favorite Parts

There are so many great numbers and scenes in Singin in the Rain that it’s hard to pick just a couple favorites, but I’m going to try!

There’s obviously the title song..

The fact that he was sick just makes this scene all the more impressive. It would have been amazing in any case.

Good Morning!

I love this routine with all 3 of them.

Make ‘Em Laugh

Despite it being a ripoff of “Be a Clown,” O’Connor’s back flips make up for any hard feelings. He was also a pretty heavy smoker…and had to film this entire sequence twice.

You Were Meant For Me

The obligatory romantic song. This is pretty cute.

A Dynamic Duo

Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor are so great together. They’re both such strong dancers and they complement each other so well. Not only do they match each other step for step, but they’re funny!

Why Singin in the Rain is So Great

The musicals numbers are all awesome. The actors are great and the story is fun. It gives a great inside look into the transition from silent films to talkies with real problems. Singin in the Rain will always be one of my favorites and watching it never gets old.

  3. I’m not a big musical person, but I love Singin’ in the Rain. It’s one of my all-time fave movies, and what’s not to love? The script, the cast, the amusing lines, the nod to Hollywood history…it’s all there!

Your review was every bit as enjoyable as the film. 🙂

  4. I have yet to meet a person who doesn’t like Singin’ in the Rain. It’s such a joyous, sweet movie. My favorite number is Moses Supposes – I think about it every time I hear about speech coaches.
